A climate projection that says warming will fall between two values is often treated as evidence that nobody really knows. In fact the range is the finding. A projection with no range would be far less trustworthy.
What a range actually communicates
Uncertainty in scientific results usually reflects known variability: differences between models, natural fluctuation, measurement precision, and future choices that have not been made yet. Quantifying that variability is harder than ignoring it, and a stated range is a claim about how large the unknown is.
Doubt, by contrast, means lacking a basis for judgment. These are opposites, and conflating them is one of the most effective ways to make solid science sound shaky.
Teaching it with dice
Our simplest classroom demonstration uses dice. Nobody can predict a single roll, and everybody can predict the distribution over many rolls. Students grasp the distinction quickly: unpredictable in detail, highly predictable in aggregate. Climate behaves the same way relative to weather.
Why it matters beyond science class
Students who understand uncertainty read news differently. They stop expecting single numbers, they notice when a source omits a range, and they become harder to persuade with false confidence. That habit generalizes far past climate.
