Charging for Little Builders would make the program easier to run. Fees reduce no-shows, fund materials, and create a planning budget. We have considered it seriously more than once, and we keep landing in the same place.
Price is a filter
Even a small fee changes who attends. It filters by household budget, and it filters by the confidence to spend money on something unfamiliar. The families most likely to opt out are often the ones with the least access to enrichment programming already.
The workshop exists to widen access to science. A pricing structure that narrows the audience defeats the goal, even if it improves the operations.
What we do instead
We run smaller sessions than demand would allow, because quality drops when we stretch. We keep materials deliberately cheap, using household items rather than lab supplies. We host at public libraries, which removes venue cost and puts us where families already go.
We also over-register modestly, because free events reliably see attrition, and an empty seat serves nobody.
The tradeoff we accept
Free means slower growth. We add sessions as capacity allows rather than as demand appears, and we say no more often than we would like. That is the cost of the commitment, and we think it is the right one.
