The first Little Builders workshop we ran taught us more about instructional design than any amount of planning had. Elementary students are an honest audience. If a segment is not working, you know within ninety seconds.
Pacing beats content
Our original plan packed too much into two hours. We cut roughly a third of the material and the workshops improved immediately. Young students need transitions, movement, and time to talk to each other. A session that covers three ideas well outperforms one that covers seven poorly.
We now structure every workshop in short blocks: a question, a hands-on activity, a group discussion, and a reset. No block runs longer than about twelve minutes.
Materials should be familiar
Laboratory equipment creates distance. Cups, sponges, gravel, coffee filters, and food coloring create curiosity. When students recognize the materials, they focus on the phenomenon instead of the apparatus, and they can repeat the experiment at home, which is where the real learning tends to stick.
When the experiment fails
It will. A filter clogs, a model floods, a container leaks. We used to treat these moments as problems to hide. Now we narrate them out loud, because a failed experiment is the most accurate picture of science that a classroom ever gets.
The question we ask is always the same: what did we expect, what happened instead, and what would we change? Students answer that better than adults do.
